ok mechanics, this lady needs your help….i was driving down the interstate on christmas day and i have a 1990 honda civic hatchback. all of a sudden it was like it ran out of gas(which it did not, it was half full). i put it in a lower gear, it is a standard, pressed the gas and it did nothing. and it just came to a complete stop and died. i waited for a little while and tried to start it again and it acted like it wanted to start but it sputtered and the tail pipe did alot of popping. i had a very reliable garage pick it up and he was closed today but he thinks its the distributor or the cap or something like that. he tries to get parts from salvage yards to keep it cheap for me. i am soooooo limited with money right now. i am broke. how much does a job like that cost? just a ball park figure would help me out. please, your opinions would be so helpful. thank you.

The air conditioner seem to make the noise louder, so I leave it off until the noise goes away. It lasts about 15-30 seconds.
Someone told me it might be the water pump….but I have seen no leakage to confirm this. Money is tight right now, and I only drive 5-10 miles a day to work and back. If I buy a water pump online and have an auto-shop install it, would it be a lot cheaper than having the auto-shop order it? or is it something else entirely?
